Suncor Waste Water Treatment Plant

Fort McMurray, Canada

Bauer Foundations Canada (BFC) was contracted by Bird Industrial Group to construct 221no. piles (181no. temporary cased and 40no. permanently cased). The project was for the installation of a Waste Water Treatment plant for the Millennium Upgrader at Suncor. The project is located at the east side of the Millennium Upgrader at the Suncor Main Plant, approximately 30km north of Fort McMurray. Three rigs in total were used (two Bauer BG28 and one BG18). Mobilization and demobilization of each of the rigs was staggered as access to the work areas became available.

There were two key challenges during the execution of the pile installation: (1) working during severe winter conditions and (2) dealing with a congested work area. The winter months and extreme temperatures presented challenges for both the equipment
and workforce. Despite this, the performance was kept up due to different measures implemented by BFCA (coordinating works together with other trades on site, constant site rearrangements to assure a small footprint) and clients schedule needs were met.

Throughout the project BFCA experienced severe congestion due to the size of the lot and the fact that other contractors were working in the area. During the most congested moments there were 2 large drill rigs, 2 bobcats, 2 concrete pumps, 2 excavators, 2 RT cranes, 2 hydro-vacs, loader, zoom boom, open excavations and two articulated trucks together with 86 people working within the ISBL lot (46mx83m).
