Shell Albian Sands - Jack Pine Mine - Primary Separation Cell

Fort McMurray, Canada

In 2011 BAUER Foundations Canada Inc. (BFCA) was awarded by Shell the contract for the installation of 28 foundation piles of a diameter of 1.2m and 45m deep for the Primary Separation Cell at Albian Sands's Jack Pine Mine.

The rotary drill rig BG 28 drilled the borehole under polymer slurry support to prevent wall collapse. Due to the pile length of 45m  two sections of reinforcement cages have
been spliced.

Cold weather conditions were challenging for equipment and personnel. Bentonite plant, lab and lines had to be heated. Concrete mix and delivery terms had to be adjusted and the piles had to be heated during the curing.
